Albert Einstein once said ¨ The question that sometimes drives me hazy : Am I or the others crazy?¨ This illustrates the criminal mind in the 1930s because that's when crime flourished and caused chaos. George Nelson was a schemey bank robber and horrific murderer. Bonnie and Clyde were a chilling duo who robbed banks left and right, they even got mobbed with their crew. Machine Gun Kelly was a spooky kidnapper who ruled this decade of horror. These criminals and many more are the reason the 1930s was such a horrid time.
First, George Nelson or “Baby Face” was an extremely harsh bank robber and murderer during one of the most terrible time, The Great Depression. The Great Depression was when all the stock markets crashed, everyone lost their money. George Nelson was a frightful killer in the 1920s and 30s and was an associate to John Dillinger (Baby Face Nelson Biography 1). He was like a sidekick to John. He started his life in crime at the age of 13. Nelson was sentenced to jail in 1931 for a bank robbery, but he soon escaped from custody(1). Obviously hearing his, people knew he was a dangerous man. April 22, 1934, and special agents proceeded to the Little Bohemia Lodge. Barking dogs alerted the gangsters to the impending FBI raid. The gangsters escaped in the dark, leaving a few women associates, including Helen Gillis, behind. Nelson fled to a nearby home and forced his way in with two hostages (Lester Gillis 1). Overall, George Nelson was a terrible man, and an evil genius. Additionally, Bonnie and Clyde were the frightening duo that left a dreadful mark on America. They and their gang were particularly famous in the early 1930s and ultimately killed nine police officers and several civilians before they themselves were ambushed and killed in louisiana in 1934 (American History: The Great Depression: Gangsters and G-Men 4). They were certainly fearless, but that just means they would do just about anything, and that's not always a positive thing. Bonnie and Clyde, as they were popularly known, robbed gas stations, restaurants, and small town banks, chiefly in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Missouri (Jenkins 1). So not only did they rob but they went all along the south, which must have affected so many businesses negatively. Bonnie and Clyde and the Barrow gang lived a hard, uneasy life punctuated by narrow escapes, bungled robberies, injury, and murder (mcgasko 2). To sum it up, Bonnie and Clyde were a nail-biting pair you would not want to have walk into your bank. Last but absolutely not least, George Francis Barnes Jr. nicknamed ¨Machine Gun Kelly¨ was an intimidating gangster and kidnapper. Born on July 18, 1895, Machine Gun Kelly was a bootlegger, small-time bank robber and kidnapper who ranged through Tennessee, Mississippi, Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico (10). He was a very rebellious person, and pretty committed to crime. Two men, one armed with a machine gun (George) and the other with a pistol, opened the screen door and kidnapped a man (fbi 1) . George would kidnap people and then steal their money, and then toss them out onto the street and threaten them. Beginning his criminal career as a bootlegger, he was caught in 1927 and subsequently spent a few months in jail, where he met bank robbers (11). George was so terrible that he went into jail horrible and came out even worse. He was strong and was unstoppable, jail just made him more courageous. Basically, George was terrifying and someone you wouldn’t want to mess with. All in all, the 1930s was a very scary and dangerous time with crime and chaos as the main theme throughout the country. George Nelson was a crazy, frightening robber, and Bonnie and Clyde were the unpredictable couple who were extremely rebellious. “Machine Gun Kelly” was a powerful kidnapper who was uncontrollably insane. In conclusion, the 1930s were full of crime and taught us a great lesson; don’t follow other people’s choices make your own. |
